What This Book Is About
Zanzibar is a crow who wakes up one morning and realizes he hasn't done anything truly remarkable in his life. Not one single incredible feat. So he decides today is the day. His plan? Find a camel, ride it across the desert, and become a legend. There's just one problem: Zanzibar has never seen a camel. He doesn't know where to find one. And every animal he asks for help has a completely different idea of what a remarkable life looks like.
Originally published in French as L'incroyable Zanzibar, this quirky chapter book by Catharina Valckx is a small gem of European children's literature. The hand-drawn illustrations in India ink and orange pencil give every page a handmade, storybook charm that feels both classic and completely original. The humour is dry and offbeat—more Shaun the Sheep than slapstick—and the story's gentle message about self-belief and the unexpected shapes of adventure makes it a book that children return to again and again. It's short, it's strange, and it's absolutely delightful.
Available at Popular bookstores, Kinokuniya, and the Singapore National Library.
Why We Recommend This Book
For A1-level readers (Grade 3), Zanzibar is a wonderful choice for three reasons.
First, at just 62 pages with generous illustrations on every spread, this is one of the most accessible chapter books on the G3 reading list. For children making the transition from picture books to chapter books, Zanzibar is the perfect bridge—it looks and feels like a "real book" but never overwhelms.
Second, it's translated from French, giving children a taste of European literary style—something different from the British and American books that dominate most school libraries. UWC values international-mindedness, and reading books from different literary traditions is one of the simplest ways to develop it.
Third, Zanzibar's quest to do something remarkable speaks to every child who has ever felt small or ordinary. The book gently shows that believing in yourself matters more than the outcome—a lesson that builds confidence both in reading and in life.
