Nelson is a nerdy boy who lives in a junkyard with his grandmother and his cousin Kenny. On the morning of his tenth birthday he wakes up to find that he has become a ninja, and the rest of the book is about learning to use powers he never asked for.
This is the first book in Anh Do's Ninja Kid series, illustrated throughout by Jeremy Ley. Cartoon drawings run alongside the text and the chapters are short, which is what makes the book work for readers who are still building stamina.
