What This Book Is About
In Draconis, everyone believes dragons are extinct. Tomas is an orphan working at an inn until he is recruited into the Dragonseer Guild, the secret society that knows better, and finds that he can summon a dragon of his own.
The dragon is Ironskin, and the two of them have to learn to trust each other to save the city. This is the first book in Alastair Chisholm's Dragon Storm series, illustrated throughout by Eric Deschamps.
Available at Popular bookstores, Kinokuniya, and the Singapore National Library.
Why We Recommend This Book
Dragon Storm is tailor-made for Grade 3 readers who are ready for chapter books but still want the excitement of illustrations on every page. At 160 pages with generous artwork, the book feels approachable rather than intimidating, giving young readers a sense of accomplishment when they finish.
It is also the right place to start. This is book one, the story in which Tomas finds out what he is, so a reader meets Draconis and the Dragonseer Guild at the same moment he does, with nothing to catch up on.
Reading Level Guide
Building toward this book. The fantasy vocabulary may be tricky. Try simpler illustrated chapter books or graded readers first.
Perfect difficulty. Short chapters, action-packed plot, and illustrations on every page make this a page-turner at A2.
A quick, comfortable read at B1. Still exciting, but try The One and Only Ivan or Sherlock Holmes for more challenge.
