What It Does
「我爱拼单词」 is a free vocabulary spelling practice tool built by Oak Education. It tests whether students can spell English words correctly from audio prompts and example sentences, rather than simply recognizing them in a list.
The tool draws from Oak Education's vocabulary database, which organizes over 10,000 English words by CEFR level (A1 through C2) and by curated word books tied to specific exams and school subjects. Students choose a level or word book, set the number of words per session, and practice spelling each word after hearing it pronounced and seeing it used in a sentence.
The tool is free to use, works on mobile and desktop, and tracks each student's progress automatically.
Spelling is the gap between recognition and production. Many students can read a word correctly but cannot write it from memory. This tool targets that specific skill.
Two Practice Modes
The tool offers two ways to select vocabulary for practice.
By CEFR Level
This mode sorts words into six levels following the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. A1 (924 words) covers the most basic daily vocabulary for beginners. A2 (1,063 words) adds common words for understanding simple sentences. B1 (1,167 words) introduces workplace and academic vocabulary. B2 (2,962 words) covers more complex academic and professional terms. C1 (4,079 words) reaches advanced academic vocabulary approaching native speaker level. C2 (462 words) includes rare and highly specialized terms.
If you are unsure which CEFR level fits your child, our CEFR guide explains each level with real language examples.
By Word Book
This mode lets students practice vocabulary from specific exam word lists or subject areas. Instead of working through all words at a given difficulty level, students focus on exactly the vocabulary they need for a particular test or course.
Both modes let students choose how many new words to practice per session: 10, 20, or 50. The tool automatically mixes in new words with previously missed ones.
The Word Book Library
The word book library covers four categories.
General English
The Oxford 3000 (3,612 words) and Oxford 5000 (4,682 words) are the two most widely used frequency-based vocabulary lists published by Oxford University Press. The Oxford 3000 covers everyday communication and basic academic reading; the Oxford 5000 extends this with 2,000 additional words suited for IELTS, TOEFL, and academic study.
Academic vocabulary
Three tiers from the Academic Word List: Core 200 (sublist 1–3, 156 words), Intermediate 200 (sublist 4–7, 219 words), and Advanced 150 (sublist 8–10, 127 words). These cover the high-frequency vocabulary that appears across academic texts regardless of discipline.
Exam-specific word books

Connected to Oak resources
Two additional word books connect to other Oak Education resources: Literature (132 words from Romeo and Juliet and other set texts) and Graded Reading (1,780 words from Oak Education's graded reading articles).
How Spelling Practice Works
When a student starts a practice session, the tool presents one word at a time. For each word, the student hears an audio pronunciation and sees an example sentence with the target word removed. The student types the spelling from memory.
If the spelling is correct, the student moves to the next word. If incorrect, the student can try again or skip to the next word. Words spelled incorrectly are automatically queued for review in future sessions.
Each word also has a bookmark icon. Clicking it adds the word to the student's personal word book (生词本), where it can be reviewed and practiced separately at any time.

Progress Tracking and 生词本
The tool tracks how many words a student has mastered in each CEFR level and word book. On the main page, each level and word book shows a progress counter (e.g. 「已学 283 / 2962」), so students can see at a glance how far they have progressed.
The 生词本 (personal word book) is a separate collection of words the student has bookmarked during practice. Students can open it from the main page and practice only their saved words. This is useful for focused review before a test, or for building a personal list of words that are consistently difficult.

Who Is This For
The tool is designed for any student learning English vocabulary, but several groups will find it particularly useful.
Exam preparation students
Students preparing for SAT, TOEFL, IELTS, SSAT, KET, or PET can practice spelling the specific vocabulary those tests require. Spelling accuracy matters in the writing sections of these exams, and many students recognize words they cannot spell correctly.
IB/AP/IGCSE subject learners
Students can use the subject-specific word books to learn the technical terminology for their courses. The subject vocabulary goes beyond language class: a Biology student can practice spelling 「photosynthesis」, 「mitochondria」, and 「homozygous」 while learning what these terms mean in context.
Younger and EAL learners
Students building foundational vocabulary can start with A1 and A2 levels and work their way up systematically through the CEFR framework. If you want to understand where your child stands, our English assessment guide explains how to measure their current level accurately.
Oak Education users
Students already using other Oak resources will find natural connections: the Graded Reading word book covers vocabulary from the reading articles, and the Literature word book covers terms from the study guides.
Limitations
The tool focuses on spelling from audio and example sentences. It does not test meaning recall (e.g. 「what does this word mean?」), usage in original sentences, or collocations. Students who need to work on word meaning or productive use should combine this tool with the Oak vocabulary tool, which provides definitions, CEFR levels, and part-of-speech information.
The word book library is curated by Oak Education. Students cannot create custom word lists or import their own vocabulary. The tool relies on Oak's vocabulary database for all word data.
Progress tracking requires a student account. Without logging in, practice progress is not saved between sessions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this tool free?
Yes. All CEFR levels and word books are free to use. An account is needed to save progress and build a personal word book.
How is this different from the Oak vocabulary tool?
The vocabulary tool at /resources/vocabulary is for looking up word meanings, seeing CEFR levels, and reading definitions. 「我爱拼单词」 tests whether you can actually spell the words correctly from audio and context. They complement each other.
Can I use it on my phone?
Yes. The tool is fully responsive and works on mobile browsers. Audio playback works on all modern devices.
How are the IB/AP subject word books organized?
Each subject word book is organized by topic area within the subject. For example, the Biology word book covers life processes, animal physiology, plant physiology, reproduction and genetics, ecology, and variation and selection.
Can I create my own word list?
Not currently. You can use the 「生词本」 feature to bookmark words from any level or word book into your personal collection, but you cannot import external word lists.
