Programme Overview

NUS Environmental Studies (BES) is a cross-disciplinary programme (XDP) that tackles environmental challenges through an integrated lens — combining biology, geography, economics, law, public health, and engineering perspectives. Launched in 2011 and restructured as an XDP under CHS, the programme trains you to understand issues like climate change, pollution, habitat degradation, and urban sustainability from multiple angles. What makes BES distinctive is its breadth: you study both the science of environmental systems and the policy frameworks needed to address them. The programme is jointly offered by the Faculty of Science and FASS, with contributions from CDE, Law, and Public Health. BES is a direct admission programme — you apply for it specifically. Students without H2 Biology take a bridging course. If you want to work on sustainability, conservation, or environmental policy, this is one of the most interdisciplinary options available in Singapore.
