Overview
Literature and Linguistics brings together three rich intellectual traditions: the critical study of English literature and world writing, the deep exploration of Chinese language, literature, and culture, and the scientific analysis of how all languages work. Rather than choosing a single literary tradition or focusing narrowly on language structure, students in this field develop a panoramic understanding of how humans use language to create meaning, tell stories, preserve culture, and connect across boundaries.
NTU's School of Humanities offers dedicated programmes in English, Chinese, and Linguistics & Multilingual Studies, each drawing on faculty expertise in literary criticism, translation studies, sociolinguistics, computational linguistics, and creative writing. The English programme covers British, American, and postcolonial literatures alongside literary theory. The Chinese programme spans classical poetry and philosophy through modern fiction and diaspora studies. The Linguistics programme investigates phonetics, syntax, semantics, psycholinguistics, and natural language processing. Together, these tracks provide a uniquely comprehensive humanities education suited to Singapore's multilingual, multicultural context.
Graduates command an unusually versatile skill set. In a city-state where English and Chinese are both working languages, bilingual literary and linguistic expertise opens doors in translation, journalism, content strategy, publishing, education, NLP engineering, and government communications. Singapore's position as a bridge between East and West means professionals who can navigate both literary traditions and understand the science of language are in growing demand across media, technology, diplomacy, and cultural institutions.
