From libraries to bookstores, literary genres function as a way of grouping literary writings into recognizable categories. But beyond allowing readers to easily find a book, what exactly is a literary genre, why are there so many, and how are they determined? This summer course explores the defining characteristics of some of the main literary genres as well as how these genres may overlap. It introduces students to a variety of genres, both classic and contemporary, to understand why authors choose a particular genre to express their vision and how that genre serves them best. Guided questions include: How did the concept of literary genres develop, and under what circumstances did the vast number of genres evolve? What are the main literary genres and their characteristics? Which literary devices are employed in each genre, and how do they enhance our understanding of the themes? What are subgenres and why are they significant? What is the role of social media in creating greater public awareness of literary genres? Why were these genres chosen to represent the author's vision, and how else might that vision have been expressed? A literary work from four major genres will be studied in depth: Literary Fiction, Bildungsroman, Dystopian, and Fantasy.
