Course Overview

This intensive 3-week writing camp will further help high-school students (Grade 9-12) develop more sophisticated writing skills. This course will focus on preparing students for university-level classes and writing expectations. Over the course of the camp, students will learn how to make strong, logical arguments. They will also partake in in-class activities such as synthesising scholarly material (e.g., empirical articles, chapters from an edited book) and providing criticism and feedback on sample student works. Students will also have the opportunity to practice writing essays based on past John Locke essay prompts. Pre-requisite: At least a B received on their most recent English grade. Students are strongly advised to have pre-existing knowledge of essay-writing and its components (i.e., understanding of topic sentences, rationale, evidence, and explanation in body paragraphs). Course Breakdown: Week 1 will focus on critical reading of material and writing. Week 2-3 will focus on writing and defending various arguments. Week 3 will focus on developing implications and expanding their thinking.
